Honouring Military Veterans: A Community Poppy Project
The Poppy and Remembrance in Canada
Since 1921, the poppy has stood as a powerful symbol of remembrance in Canada. Inspired by the iconic poem In Flanders Fields by Canadian Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, the poppy reminds us of the sacrifices made by so many in service to our country.
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow / Between the crosses, row on row..."
Each November, Canadians proudly wear the poppy to honour military veterans of all wars who served and those who fell, ensuring their memory lives on. Remembrance Day gives us pause to reflect on our collective hope of peace throughout the world.
The St. Paul’s Westport Poppy Display
This year, St. Paul’s is honoured to launch a special community project to commemorate our veterans, with the support of the Royal Canadian Legion Upper Rideau Branch 542.

We are inviting everyone to help create a beautiful, large-scale cascade of crocheted and knitted poppies to drape over the entrance of St. Paul’s Anglican Church and flow onto the lawn — a powerful visual tribute to those who served. Whether you are an experienced crafter or just learning, your contribution is welcome. Our goal is to create several hundred handmade poppies, and we need your help!

How to Get Involved
-
Create Poppies: Knit or crochet poppies at home using the free patterns available on our website.
-
Get a Kit: Poppy-making kits will be available for purchase at St. Paul’s. Participants are also welcome to use their own materials.
-
Drop-Off Location: Finished poppies can be placed in the collection box at the church entrance on George Street throughout October.
-
Deadline: All poppies should be dropped off by October 31.
